Module 6 Janeczko Collection
Summary:
Paul Janeczko created a book he says he wished he had as a young writer. Advice and poems from some of the most well known poets that will inspire any young writer. With so many lines that encourage reading and writing this compilation is a great addition to any classroom. Students will be inspired by advice such as; look, listen, smell, touch, remember. This book provides the wisdom of 32 poets including Janeczko himself.
Analysis:
I was so impressed with this book. Starting with the title, there is so much to share with students of all ages. The cover is a blue sky covered with clouds. You can start a great conversation asking students what they think the title means. On the inside flap they can see… everyone watches clouds, naming creatures they’ve seen. I see sky differently, I see the blue between.. an excerpt from The Blue Between by Kristine O’Connell. This is such a thought provoking line that challenges kids to change their perspectives. The book offers a table of contents that has so many familiar poets. Names that include; Nikki Grimes, Lee Bennett Hopkins, Marilyn Singer and so many more. Each poet includes a letter and a poem or two. The entries do not have to be read in order. In fact, I bookmarked a variety of pages throughout the book. Each poet offers a unique letter of encouragement. The letters include support, advice, writing exercises and/or personal experiences. The books ends with “notes on the contributors”. Each poet has a short biography accompanied by a picture. Janeczko said himself that this is the book he wished he had as a young inspiring poet. I believe this book is exactly what young writers need to encourage their art. I think it is appropriate for students of any age.

Activity:
This is a book that can be revisited over and over again. Teachers can share letters from the poets after sharing their work. Hearing their advice can really help young writers connect with professional writers. A teacher can keep a running list of advice that students can reference when they are feeling stuck. This book humanizes writers and can inspire students to try to model their process.
