The beautiful writing sets the stage for this historic concert before switching to a chronological account of Marian’s life, struggles and successes. The accomplished singer lived an extraordinary life and made waves for change with the help of her devoted fans, family and friends.
Analysis:
Russell Freedman’s Newbery Honor and Sibert Medal-winning book tells the story of Marian Anderson’s life. Anderson never set out to be an activist and Freedman is very intentional about portraying her humble strength and influence. The book includes so many details you often forget you are reading a true story. Anderson’s quotes sprinkled throughout the book really allows the reader to know her and her thoughts during so many historical events. An extensive bibliography, discography, reproductions of concert programs and an index are included. The abundance of photos and newspaper clippings make the story more real and personal.
